The environment is the central character in Resíduos: uma oportunidade [Waste - an opportunity]. The book recounts the history of waste over the centuries, with special focus on recent developments in Portugal.
In a simultaneously educational and informative approach, the author Pedro Almeida Vieira highlights alterations in consumption patterns and changes in civilisation and technology in the area of waste. While waste used to be considered just another problem, thanks to recent progress it is now regarded as an opportunity for profit and, above all, environmental gains.
The official launch of the book, which is being published by Sopa de Letras, will be at Livraria Ferin bookshop in Lisbon on 6 June. It will be presented by Professor Viriato Soromenho Marques, who also wrote the foreword. The author and António Barahona d’Almeida, Chairman of the Board at Sociedade Ponto Verde, will also attend.
The book\'s release is one of the events that Sociedade Ponto Verde has planned to commemorate its 15th anniversary of working for the recycle of packaging waste.
\"We want the book to contribute to greater environmental awareness in Portugal and enhance the history of a sector that is essential to the sustainability of our societies,\" said Luís Veiga Martins, Managing Director of Sociedade Ponto Verde.
The book will be on sale to the public as of 24 June.
